MOESIA INFERIOR, Nicopolis ad Istrum. Macrinus. AD 217-218. Æ Tetrassarion (26mm, 10.48 g, 6h). Marcus Claudius Agrippa, legatus Augusti pro praetore. Laureate and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / River-god Istros reclining left, holding reed and resting elbow on shield, prow of ship in background. HH&J 8.23.32.1; AMNG 1698 var. (bust); Varbanov 3365 var. (obv. legend). Dark green patina, minor smoothing, scratches. VF.

From the Dr. Michael Slavin Collection.

HH&J does not identify the river god and describes the reverse: “resting with l. arm on uncertain object”, the uncertain object is clearly a shield. This scene could represent a preparation for an ocean voyage or war, the reverse diety could be Oceanus instead of the typical river-god Istros.
