Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (20mm, 2.92 g, 1h). Contemporary imitation. Uncertain mint. IMP [...] CARAVSIVS AV, Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / V IT A I III, Spes advancing left, holding flower and raising hem of skirt. Cf. RIC V 1060 (for reverse legend type). Green patina. VF.
From the Conti Collection.
An interesting imitation featuring clear characteristics of Spes on the reverse but one who is holding a ‘flower’ that almost more closely resembled the olive branch of Carausius’ more prevalent Pax reverses. While the obverse legend is clearly imitating a known legend of Carausius, the reverse legend–while clearly legible–is uncertain. This in-of-itself is not unusual even for a number of official issues of Carausius as seen in the Blackmoor Hoard (1982) and consequently is not surprising to find on a contemporary imitation such as this example.
