On 13 January 1884, William Price, a medical doctor, socio-political activist and druid, cremated the body of his infant son, Iesu Christ, on a hill near Llantrisant, Wales, causing an outrage and the intervention of local police officers who dragged the corpse from the burning pyre. Price successfully defeated the charges brought against him, convincing the judge that cremation was not illegal. The case set a precedent allowing for the beginning of officially sanctioned cremation in Great Britain. This medal was one of 300 struck by Price to commemorate his victory.
