HANOVER. Matthew Clogie. 1812-1875. Engraved CU Token (35mm, 24.32 g, 12h). In stippled engraving on a smoothed penny: Matthew/ Clogie Born/ November 21/ 1812 Aged 20/ November 21/ 1832 / Remember/ me when this/ you see and bear / me in your/ mind. Brown surfaces, edge dings, engraving mostly as made.

Mathew Clogie was tried and convicted of larceny at the midsummer session of the Warwick Court of quarter sessions in 1832. Unlike other convicts, Clogie appears to have avoided transport to Australia, receiving a three month sentence. He was possibly still imprisoned when he carved this piece on the occasion of his twentieth birthday, on 21 November. Clogie appears to have died in Warwick in 1875.
