Valens. AD 364-378. AR Argentus (19.5mm, 3.18 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck AD 367-375. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VOT/ VX/ MVLT/ XX in four lines within laurel wreath with large central jewel; •CONS. Cf. RIC 35 (Valentinian); cf. RSC 75† (same). Toned, some scratches and marks, trace deposits. Good VF. Extremely rare and unpublished.

A fascinating piece formerly unknown for Valens bears characteristics unmistakably similar to the concurrent Valentinian issue catalogued as RIC IX 35. Along with the similar siliquae known for both emperors (RIC IX 38a-b), these argentei feature similar characteristics. While the siliquae bear a mint mark of C(Christogram)S, the argentei of Valentinian bear the unmistakable •CONS mint mark. On this new issue for Valens we also find the •CONS mint mark clearly displayed on this presently unique argenteus; an essential piece for any collector of Valens and an excellent addition to any late Roman Imperial collection.

Closing Date and Time: 22 February 2023 at 13:23:40 ET.
