Anonymous. Circa 215-212 BC. Æ Sextans (24mm, 10.91 g, 12h). Rome mint. Head of Mercury right, wearing winged petasus; • • (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; •• (mark of value) below. Crawford 41/9; Sydenham 107; RBW 133-4. Brown patina. Good VF. Overstruck on a semiliberal uncia, Crawford 38/6.

Ex AK Collection (Triton XII, 5 January 2009), lot 463 (part of).

An unusually clear example of the undertype. Featuring most evidently the prow reverse emanating and curling backwards from the front of Mercury’s petasos. Additionally, the mark of value is visible beneath Mercury’s neck as if part of Roma’s crest in the reverse fields.

All winning bids are subject to an 20% buyer’s fee.
