ATTICA, Athens. Circa 400/390-353 BC. AR Obol(?) (7.5mm, 0.58 g, 6h). Helmeted head of Athena right, with profile eye and regular palmette / Four crescents within incuse square. Kroll –; HGC 4, 1667. Toned, much find patina remaining, off center on obverse. Near VF. Very rare.
This denomination has traditionally been considered an obol, but the weight of all the published examples range from 0.54 to 0.62 grams, which is consistently light for that denomination. Also, there appears to be no place for this issue of obols, as standard Athena/owl type obols are known for each period. As such, it is likely that this is not an obol, but an intermediate denomination between an obol and hemiobol.
