Sydenham and Crawford surmised that this reverse imitated the “elephant trampling serpent” denarius type of Julius Caesar, struck circa 49-48 BC but Haselgrove has studied the archaelogical context of the type, and the evidence suggests that the circulation peaked significantly earlier, circa 100-50 BC.
