KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 4.02 g, 10h). Amphipolis mint. Struck under Antipater, circa 325-323/2 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Eagle standing right, head left; boukranion to right. Price 95; Troxell, Studies, Issue E8, 161 (same dies as illustration). Lightly toned, small metal flaw at obverse edge, minor scratch on reverse. VF. Very rare.

From the Jim Gilman Collection, purchased from Kirk Davis, 2 January 2014.

Troxell thought that the eagle was standing on an object, such as a long torch or thyrsos, but any distinguishing element of such an object is not visible on the coin she references, nor the present coin. If there was such an object, it would be a variety unlisted in Price.
