Constantine V Copronymus, with Leo III. 741-775. AV Solidus (20.5mm, 4.50 g, 7h). Constantinople mint. Struck 764-773. COnSτAnτInOS S LЄOn O nЄOS, crowned and draped busts of Constantine V and Leo IV facing; cross above, • between / C LЄ ON PA MЧL ΦA, crowned bust of Leo III facing, wearing loros, holding cross potent in right hand. DOC 2g.1-4 var. (officina); Füeg 5.C.3 (same dies); SB 1551. Lustrous, trace deposits. Good VF. Extremely rare.

From DOC (p. 294): “The appearance of the letter Φ, which had never occurred in the traditional pattern of officina letters, shows that the numerical series of officinae had now been abandoned in favor of new control marks whose exact significance is unknown.” Fueg lists only one dual officina type for this series. Of the nearly 700 examples of SB 1551 recorded at CoinArchives, not another specimen has been recorded. This is an extreme rarity.

The final winners of all Keystone 6 lots will be determined at the online sale that will be held on 11 March 2022. Session Two will be held Friday afternoon, 11 March 2022 beginning at 2:00 PM ET.
