KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Demetrios I Poliorketes – Antigonos II Gonatas. Circa 300-250 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 16.61 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III. Uncertain mint in the Peloponnese. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; hanging wreath in left field. Price 777; Troxell, Peloponnesian, Group II, Issue 5. Toned, minor double strike, a little die wear. Good VF. Struck on a broad flan. Extremely rare, Troxell cites one example (the sole piece in Pella), none in CoinArchives, none additional in ANS photofile (Price cites an example in the Armenak hoard, but it is of significantly different style, thus likely a different issue). |
