Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ Sestertius (31mm, 26.99 g, 12h). “Travel series” issue. Rome mint. Group 10, circa AD 130-133. Bareheaded and draped bust right / DACIA in exergue, S C across field, Dacia seated left on rock pile, holding signum (standard) in right hand and falx (curved sword) over left shoulder. RIC II.3 1651; RIC II 849; Banti 235. Dark tan river patina, edge chips and a few natural surface fissures mainly confined to reverse. VF. A handsome piece.

With Trajan’s death, his successor Hadrian inherited a Roman Empire in turmoil from his predecessor’s over-ambitious conquests. His first reaction was to abandon all of Trajan’s recent annexations, including Mesopotamia and Parthia. Dacia, however, he decided to retain, as the hard-won province had proved to be rich in precious metals and recruits for the army. This sestertius, part of Hadrian’s “Travel Series,” celebrates the province by depicting a male personification holding a Roman military standard and the deadly Dacian falx, a curved two-handed sword.
