Isaac II Angelus, with Alexius IV. Second reign, 1203-1204. Æ Tetarteron (19mm, 3.40 g, 5h). Constantinople mint. [...]IOC ΔЄCПOT, three-quarter length bust of the Theotokos, orans, with bust of Holy Infant on her breast / Empror standing facing, holding labarum and globus cruciger. Cf. DOC 1a (Isaac) and 1b (Alexius); SB 2019 (Isaac) and 2020 (Alexius). Rough green and brown patina, area of flat strike making obscuring name. Good VF.

Ex Numismatik Naumann 67 (1 July 2018), lot 773 (conserved since).

The full name is unclear on this coin, except for the final letters IOC. Since the Greek forms of their names both end in IOC, and the earlier portion is unclear to a combination of flat strike and double strike, it could be either ruler. The illustrated example of the reverse of DOC 1a, which is a coin of Isaac, shares a number of stylistic affinities with our coin. However, even with this, a more definitive attribution of the ruler is uncertain.

Closing Date and Time: 18 December 2019 at 13:27:00 ET.
