SCARABS. Ancient Egypt. New Kingdom. 1550-1070 BCE. Steatite. (18x13 mm). Back has a well engraved beetle. Base engraved with “MAAT” and “NEB”. Cf. Petrie, Historical Scarabs, pl. XVIII, T4. A few minor chips to edge of face. Otherwise, as made. pierced for suspension.

Possibly variation of Tuthmosis III. 1479-1423 BCE. Cartouche normally reads r’mn ma’At; however, variation of hieroglyph on this piece raises some suspicion. Ma’At on pharoah’s name uses an X over the knees of the kneeler. Here, use of ma’At feather (both pronounced same) and exclusion of r’ symbol.
