SCARABS. Ancient Egypt. New Kingdom. 1550-1077 BC. Blue glazed Steatite. (20x13 mm). Back carved with “TURTLE”. Base engraved with “ANKH”, “MAAT” and “ NEB”. Chipped in areas. Nicely preserved glaze. Pierced for suspension. Very rare.

The TURTLE in ancient Egypt considered to be the emblem of longevity and stability, Due to their long life span, slow movement, sturdiness and wrinkled appearance, they represent patient and wisdom and able to defend itself on its own. ANKH ia a symbol of eternal life. MAAT represents truth, justice, morality and balance. NEB represents Lord, Master, God or Pharaoh. The back of this scarab means “STABILITY AND WISDOM”, The base of this scarab means “THE LORD OF BEAUTIFUL TRUTH”.
