SCARABS. Ancient Egypt. New Kingdom. 1550-1070 BCE. Steatite. (12x9 mm). Base engraved with “DJED” on left, “CROCODILE FOREPART”, “SPHINX” and “MOUNTAINS”. Some wear and a few tiny chips. Pierced for suspension. Very rare.

DJED is the pillar of Djed and believed to be rendering of a human backbone, symbol of stability and strength. Crocodile is a symbol of SOBEK the Crocodile God. Sphinx is a “grand and monumental” symbol of ancient Egyptians kingship, probably related to solar worship. Mountains symbolize DJEW, the symbol of Lower Egypt. All the hieroglyphs on this scarab “FEFER TO RA-AMUN” and has the very ultimate protection to the carriers and translates to “THE GOD OF GODS AND THE CHIEF THEBAN DEITY”.
