Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Septimius, seen from behind vis-à-vis draped bust of Domna; c/m: laureate bust of Caracalla within circular incuse / Nike advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond. RPC V.2 Online 73621; BMC 58; SNG von Aulock 2676 (both with same c/m). For c/m: Howgego 84. Dark brown patina, light porosity, edge split, obverse die shift. Near VF.

An interesting phenomenon appears on this coin, the drapery on Domna’s bust appears over the forehead of the Caracalla countermark. The countermark must have been struck onto the coin prior to the coin being struck. A survey of additional specimens shows the same phenomenon on other countermarks in the same location (see Roma E-41, lot 508 and a specimen in Berlin for similar of Domna and Künker 312, lot 2931 and CNG E-260, lot 405 for Septimius with his cuirass over the face of Caracalla). It is not likely that the countermark was carved into the die as the countermark is known in various locations on the obverse, none of the others show details of the undertype.
