KINGS of PAEONIA. Patraos. Circa 335-315 BC. AR Tetradrachm (24mm, 12.67 g, 5h). Damastion mint(?). Diademed head (of Patraos?) right / Warrior on horse rearing right, spearing enemy warrior who defends with shield and spear. Paeonian Hoard 73 (same obv. die); Peykov E2260; cf. HGC 3, 148 (for rev. type). Toned. VF.

The head on the obverse of this particular issue is quite unlike the standard appearance of Apollo on most of Patraos’ issues. Unlike the idealized appearance of the Apollo, wearing a laureate wreath, here the head is diademed and has more individualized features. The adornment of a diadem is appropriate for the actual ruler and suggests that, rather than it being a portrait of Apollo, it is, in fact, the portrait of Patraos himself (it is identified as such in the Paeonian Hoard and Peykov).
