SCARABS. Ancient Egypt. New Kingdom. 1550-1070 BCE. Steatite Scaraboid. (18x12 mm). Back carved with a Fish “NILE TILAPIA”, to convey the soul of the deceased in his passage to rebirth. Base engraved with two “KA”, “ NEB”, “LIZARD” and “CRAB”. Back chipped. Pierced for suspension. Very rare and very attractive.

KA symbolizes soul or spirit, the KA came into existence when an individual was born. It was thought that when someone died they “ met their KA”. A person’s KA would live on after their body had died , offering of food and drink would be left at the tomb entrance , so the KA could eat and drink. Neb represents the Nebet Basket which symbolizes Lord or Master. The Lizard and Crab represent the marine life in the Nile Delta.
