SCARABS. Ancient Egypt. New Kingdom. 1550-1070 BCE. Steatite. (12x8 mm). Base engraved with the crown of Lower Egypt resting on “NEB”, flanked by two “NEFER”, on each side. Chipped. Pierced for suspension.

From the Joseph A. Dow Collection; Ex Classical Numismatic Group 371 lot 1045, The Carl Devries Collection.

The crown of Lower Egypt is a red crown called “DESHRET” for the desert red land. Original rulers of Egypt invested “HORUS” with the rule over Lower Egypt. The successors Pharaohs wore the crown tp symbolize their authority over Lower Egypt. The NEB is the Nebet Basket and symbolizes Lord or Master. The NEFER is a symbol of beauty, goodness and youth, and was called that after their famous queen NEFERTITI. This scarabreads “THE LORD WHO HOLDING THIS CROWN MAY LIVE FOREVER YOUNG”.
