An albino woman of African descent, Amelia Lewsham was born to enslaved parents in Jamaica around 1748. In 1753, she was sent to England, where she was sold to John Burnett, a London exotic animal seller who would exhibit her as an oddity. After her baptism in April 1766, Lewsham took her freedom and left Burnett, claiming the baptism had freed her, and began exhibiting her body independently for her own account.
