17th CENTURY, Oxfordshire. Thame. Dorothy Burgis. CU Halfpenny Token (19mm, 1.01 g, 10h). Dated 1669. Lion rampant left / 16/ DB/ 69. Willamson 194; Dickinson 194; SCBI 44 (Norweb), 3788b (this token). Brown surfaces, roughness, slightly wavy flan. Good Fine.

Ex Martin Bridgewater Collection (Noonan’s 278, 19 September 2023), lot 1111 (part of); E.M. Norweb Collection (Spink 104, 6 July 1994), lot 422 (part of); R.A. Nott Collection.

As with many of the female token issuers of the 17th century, Dorothy Burgis may have taken over for her late husband, the brazier Thomas Burgis, after his death in 1648. Unfortunately, Dorothy’s will has not been traced. She is likely related in some way to another token issuer form the same town, John Burgis, who issued a token in 1653 (Williamson 195).

Closing Date and Time: 12 August 2026 at 15:43:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
