Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ As (27mm, 9.30 g, 6h). Countermarked for Ala II Arvacorum in north-eastern Pannonia, early-mid 1st century AD. Bare head right / Large SC; c/m: (AI)•(AR) in square countermark. For countermark: Pangerl 74. Brown patina. Host: Fair, c/m: Near VF.

This exceptionally rare countermark denotes the cavalry unit Ala II Arvacorum (a.e. Ala II Hispanorum Arvacorum). The unit was initially formed of Iberians and Aravaci, either under the reign of Augustus or Tiberius, and served in Spain. By the mid first century, archaeological evidence suggests that they were already present in Pannonia. They remained in Pannonia until the end of the first century when they were transferred once again, this time to Moesia Inferior.
