CARIA, Aphrodisias. temp. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ Assarion (25mm, 6.22 g, 6h). Diademed bust of the Senate right, drapery on left shoulder; c/m: radiate bust of Helios right within circular incuse / Tree with three leafless branches arising from a lattice enclosure; to left, man in Phrygian attire threatens tree with a double axe; to right, man in Phrygian attire kneels right, averting face. MacDonald, Coinage Type 132 (O184/R347); RPC VII.1 630.2. For c/m: Howgego 8; MacDonald 11. Brown patina, porosity. Near VF. Rare. RPC suggests that this type may have been struck early in the reign of Philip I.
