Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind; c/m: Nike standing right, holding wreath and palm within oval incuse / Hipparchus the Astronomer seated left, resting right hand on knee, left hand on seat behind him; globe on pedestal to left. RPC IV.1 Online 5545; RG 293; SNG von Aulock 7028. For c/m: Howgego 254. Red-brown patina, roughness. Good Fine. Very rare, three known to RPC, two more in CoinArchives, none with a countermark.

Hipparchus the Astronomer is honored on a few rare issues from Nicaea, where he was born circa 190 BC. His importance to classical astronomy is unsurpassed, as he compiled the first star chart, calculated the sizes of the sun and moon, determined the length of the seasons, and utilized a trigonometry table before any other mathematician.
