SAMARIA. Late 5th-early 3rd centuries BC. AR Ma’ah (9.5mm, 0.57 g, 1h). Struck under Mazday, circa 351-340/39 BC. King of Persia seated right, on throne with back terminating in swan’s head, holding flower and scepter; ŠN (in Aramaic) to left / Ahura-Mazda standing right, holding flower and uncertain object; MZ (in Aramaic, = Mazday) to left. CSC Category I.1, 23; Meshorer & Qedar 100; Sofaer 41. Light roughness. VF.

This issue in the name of Mazday is thought to have been struck in relation to the preparations for the Persian campaign in Egypt under Artaxerxes III (see CSC vol. I, pp. 67–70).
