ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. Circa 240-180 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28.5mm, 17.02 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monogram in left field. Cf. Price 2811A; CNG E-569, lot 160 (same obv. die; hammer $1900); CNG 69, lot 179 (same dies). Near VF. Very rare.

The style of the obverse and the characteristics of the flan of this piece are consistent with other examples of Alexander type tetradrachms struck in Asia Minor in the late 3rd and early 2nd centuries BC. Price 2811A references a coin in an unpublished hoard that Price saw in commerce. No example with the monogram as represented in Price has been seen to this cataloger, and many of the monograms are incorrectly rendered in Price. As such, it is possible that the monogram on the present issue is the actual monogram for 2811A.
