Constantine Ducas Comnenus Palaeologus. Despotes and Porphyrogennetos, 13th-14th century. PB Seal (37mm, 43.07 g, 12h). +/ Kω/[N(ST)A]/N[TI]/NOC/ [ΔЄC/ΠOTH] - ΠOP/ΦVPOΓ/ЄNNIT/OC Δ(OV)KA/C K[OMNH/NOC O] ΠA/[ΛAIOΛO/ΓOC] in two columnar groups, Constantine, nimbate and wearing royal attire, standing facing, holding long jeweled scepter / Metrical legend in eight lines. BLS I 2758; BZS.1948.17.4293 and BZS.1955.1.4368. Tan surfaces, some encrustation. VF. Very rare.

The son of Emperor Andronicus II, Constantine was granted the title Despotes and made governor of Avlona and later Thessalonica. During the civil war between Constantine’s father, Andronicus II, and nephew, Andronicus III, Constantine was taken prisoner by Andronicus III and imprisoned at Didymoteichon. After the war, he retired as a monk.
