PHOENICIA, Sidon. Uncertain king. Circa 435-425 BC. AR Eighth Shekel (11mm, 1.52 g, 8h). Phoenician galley under sail left; waves below / Persian king or hero standing right, drawing bow, quiver over shoulder; [to left, incuse head (of Bes?) left; to right, incuse head of goat right; all within incuse square]. Cf. E&E-S Group II.3, 120 (D1/R1 [quarter shekel]); cf. HGC 10, 215 (quarter shekel, same dies as illustration). Toned, some find patina. VF. Unique denomination for issue.

This coin is struck from the same die pair used for the unique quarter shekel recorded by Elyai & Elyai. The edge clearly does not show any cutting, so this is not simply a quarter shekel that was cut after striking. The fact that both the quarter and this eighth was struck from the same die pair speaks to the small scale of the production of these two denominations in the rare issue.
