EPEIROS, Ambrakia. Circa 458-426 BC. AR Stater (21.5mm, 8.14 g, 11h). Pegasos flying left; A to right, serpent coiled around tortoise below / Helmeted head of Athena left, helmet surmounted by bull butting left; A to upper left; all within incuse square. Ravel, Colts 12 var. (A–/P7 [unlisted obv. die]); Pegasi 4 var. (same rev. die; Pegasos with curled wing); BMC 17 var. (same rev. die; same); CNG 93, lot 195 (same dies). Toned, numerous marks. VF. Extremely rare unpubished early variety with straight winged Pegasos.

This obverse represents the earliest appearance of a straight-winged Pegasos on this coinage at Ambrakia. Previously, the first known instance was obverse die A14, paired with reverse die R12--Ravel 22.
