SCARABS. Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period. 1070-664 BC. Mottled Green Serpentine. (22x17 mm). The back well defined to show the mouth, legs and wings. Base engraved with “SPHINX” reclines below an “ANKH” and stylized vulture design. Some loss of material at top of base. Pierced for suspension. Scarce material and very rare.

The SPHINX represents grand and a symbol of ancient Egyptians Kingship. Probably related to solar worship. The ANKH is a symbol of eternal life. The Gods were often seen holding an ANKH to someone’s lips, this considered to be an offering of “THE BREATH OF LIFE”, the breathy will need in the afterlife. Some loss of material at the top of the scarab base.
