SCARABS. Ancient Egypt. 2nd Intermediate Period. 1650-1550 BCE. Steatite. (17x13 mm). Base engraved with a “HORSE” standing right flanked by “FEATHER OF MAAT” on the left and by “NEFER” on the right. Above the horse , there are “NTR” on the right and “NEB” on the left. Cf. Rowe 311. A few tiny chips. Pierced for suspension. A wonderful depiction of a horse.

Horses were introduced to Egypt by the Hyksos when they invaded Egypt around 1700 BC. during the 2nd intermediate period. Pharaohs used to ride them, trade them and given them as a gift . They were widely used in wars. Feather of Maat represents the Goddess “MAAT” of the truth and Justice. Nefer is the symbol of beauty and goodness, after the famous Egyptian Queen Nefertiti. Ntr is the symbol of a Pennant and a long handle, an emblem of divinity. Neb is the Nebet Basket symbolizes Lord or Master.
