Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (20mm, 5.18 g, 8h). Legionary issue. Uncertain mint. [... C]ARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / [...] AVG (or VIC?), bull standing right, head facing; [...]XXI. Cf. RIC V.5 2818 (for similar). Dark green patina, hard green deposits, roughness. Fine. Extremely rare.

From the Tony Holmes Collection.

Alternatively to AVG, the reverse legend of this coin could terminate in ‘VIC.’ If that reading is correct, taken paired with the bull symbol, it would strongly suggest Legio VI Victrix which did indeed defect to Carausius’ during his rebellion. The mint mark is likewise uncertain but appears to end in XXI with traces of one or two unclear letters before. This could suggest CXXI or MCXXI as potential mint mark candidates. A clearer specimen is required to confirm which issue this coin belongs to.
