ANCIENT THEMES. Lucius Verus. AD 161-169. Æ “Medallion” (36mm, 38.87 g, 6h). By Giovanni da Cavino (1500-1570). L · VERVS ΛVC ΛRM PΛRTH MΛX TR P VIIII, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Roma seated left on cuirass, one foot on stool, the other on helmet, handing flower to military figure (emperor?) standing right; to right, Victory alighting left, crowning Roma with wreath COS III in exergue. Cf. Johnson & Martini 1748, 1750-4 (for type). Beautiful warm brown patina. EF. Extremely rare struck bimetallic issue. The bimetallic strikes are the rarest and most impressive pieces of the entire Cavino series.
