ANCIENT THEMES. Helen of Troy. Æ Medallion (45mm, 34.91 g, 6h). In the style of D. Poggini (1520-1590). Later cast. EΛENH ΛHΔAIA ΣΠAPTHΣ BAΣIΛIΣΣA, bust facing, head left, wearing fillet, earring, and chiton / AKAΘAPTOΣ ΠAPIΔOΣ KΓIΣIΣ, the judgment of Paris: Paris seated right below a tree, receiving the apple from Mercury, flying above and holding caduceus; to right, Juno, Venus, and Minerva standing left along with Cupid, shooting an arrow at Paris; in background, a flock of sheep before the city walls of Troy; in foreground, river god reclining left, holding overturned urn from which water flows. Attwood 809. Warm brown patina, slight bend. VF. A finely made cast. With an old collector’s ticket in a fine hand, indicating it was purchased at auction in 1921.
