Contorniates. Late 4th-5th centuries AD. Æ Contorniate (36mm, 28.40 g, 7h). Alexander III ‘the Great’ of Macedon. ALEXANDER MA [GNVS MACEDON], draped bust of Alexander right, wearing lion’s skin; palm frond engraved to right / Male figure advancing right, head left, leading bridled and saddled horse. Alföldi, Kontorniat – (dies 15/197; unlisted combination). Glossy dark green patina, contemporary piercing and associated edge chip, with another attempted piercing, minor cleaning marks. Good VF. A beautiful example of an unpublished die combination, with this reverse type unrecorded with any Alexander obverse. Unique.
