Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Medallion (36mm, 32.77 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 327-333/337. CONSTANTI NVS MAX AVG, rosette-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS AVG N, Constantine I, wearing military attire, on horseback galloping right, thrusting spear held transversely at an enemy kneeling right, head left, raising hand, to lower right. Gnecchi II 20 and pl. 131, 34; RIC VII 309; Ntantalia – but cf. R48 (for rev. die). Brown patina, porosity, smoothing. Near Fine. Very rare.

From the W. Toliver Besson Collection. Ex Phil Peck (“Morris”) Collection (Heritage 3071, 6 January 2019), lot 32266.

This reverse die was also used for medallions of Constantine’s sons dated to AD 337-340. So, while RIC dates this issue to AD 327-333, this particular medallion may have been struck at the end of Constantine’s reign circa AD 337.
