Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. Æ Medallion (37mm, 49.30 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 159-160. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P M TR P [XXIII], laureate and cuirassed bust right / COS IIII in exergue, the emperor stands to the right with a scepter in his left hand; in front of him Victory erects a trophy; to the right in the foreground, Alexandria (or Africa) reclines on a rock to the left, wearing an elephant headdress and holding two grain ears in her left hand; with her right hand she strokes a lion. Mittag, Römische II 171 (V73/R122); Gnecchi II, p. 11, 23, pl. 45, 7 and 47, 1; Banti 126. Dark brown patina, holed, smoothing, tooling (the obv. legend incorrectly restored). Fine. Very rare.
