CARIA, Antiochia ad Maeandrum. Gallienus. AD 253-268. Æ (36mm, 23.40 g, 12h). Radiate, helmeted, and cuirassed bust left, seen from the front, holding spear and shield decorated with gorgoneion / Six-arched bridge across the Maeander river; triple-bayed gateway to left; on rail, river-god Maeander reclining left, leaning on upturned urn and holding reed and cornucopia; on gate, stork standing right. RPC X Online 60041 (this coin cited); SNG München 92; SNG von Aulock 2430. Brown patina with earthen green highlights, slight porosity. VF.

The elaborate bridge over the River Maeander, depicted on this and the following large bronzes of Gallienus, made Antiochia ad Maeandrum a strategic site in western Anatolia. The bridge survived for many centuries and was accordingly the scene of several major battles in history, most of them in the Crusader era. The modern remnants of the town has a few visible ruins, but has never been systematically excavated.
