Thomas Apokapes. Patrikios, vestes, and katepano of Edessa, circa late 11th century. PB Seal (32mm, 24.05 g, 12h). Half-length nimbate facing bust of the Theotokos, orans / Tω ΠPI, R/CTHS KAT/Π, ЄΔЄCHC/ O AΠOKAΠ/ – • – in five lines. M. Grünbart, “Die Familie Apokapes im Lichte neuer Quellen” in SBS 5 (1998), pp. 33-34 (Unknown Apokapes). Tan and gray surfaces. Good VF. Very rare.

An example of this seal was published by Grünbart in Studies in Byzantine Sigillography 5 (1998) as anonymous given that the primary ‘T’ in our specimen was not visible on that example. With this new specimen, the seal likely belonged to a Thomas as ‘Tω’ is the usual abbreviation of this name on Byzantine seals.
