MESOPOTAMIA, Rhesaena. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ (18mm, 3.80 g, 12h). Laureate head left, set on eagle flying right with wings displayed / LEG III, legionary vexillum; P(retrograde)-S across field. Castelin 12 corr. (bust); RPC V.3 Online 74978. Earthen red-brown surfaces, light porosity. Near VF. Very rare, four recorded in RPC.

Rhasaena was made a colony under Septimius Severus, when the Legio III Parthica was settled there to protect against an impending Parthian invasion, which never came. Upon the death of Trajan Decius in June 251, the legion moved to Osrhoene and coinage ceased to be struck at Rhesaena.
