PAMPHYLIA, Attaleia. 1st century BC - 1st century AD. Æ (15mm, 4.84 g, 12h). Jugate busts of Athena right / Zeus seated left, holding thunderbolt and scepter. Baydar 92 (V81/R89[?]); SNG BN 238; Dow, ACTTB, p. 187 (this coin). Dark brown patina. Near VF. Very rare.

From the Joseph A. Dow Collection. Ex J.P. Righetti Collection [6780] (Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 220, 4 October 2009), lot 168.

In his catalog of the coinage of Attaleia, Baydar places this coinage under the reign of Trajan, but the authors of RPC III argue that the epigraphy is more consistent with earlier coinages and suggest it might be a Flavian issue. That said, the thick and compact fabric of the coin suggests an even earlier issue, perhaps in the 1st century BC.

The present coin is published in Joseph A. Dow, Ancient Coins Through the Bible (Mustang, OK: Tate, 2011), in the chapter Paul’s First Missionary Journey (AD 47–49). CNG is pleased to offer coins from the collection of the author here, and in subsequent electronic auctions.
