SICILY, Messana. The Mamertinoi. 264-241 BC. Æ (28.5mm, 16.28 g, 3h). Laureate head of Ares right / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, wings spread. Särström –; CNS 3A; BAR Issue 1; HGC 2, 865; Dow, ACTTB, p. 233 (this coin). Dark red-brown patina with green hues, some pitting. VF. Extremely rare variety without symbols, CNS lists only one example known.
