CARIA, Heraclaea Salbace. Julia Domna. Augusta, AD 193-217. Æ (27mm, 12.16 g, 6h). Struck under Septimius Severus. Draped bust right / Apollo Kareios standing facing, holding patera and labrys over left shoulder; to left, Leto standing facing, head right, holding branch and long scepter; to right, Artemis standing facing, head left, holding patera and bow, quiver over left shoulder. R. Fleischer, “Ein Heiligtum für Apollo, Artemis und Leto bei Herakleia Salbake in Karien” in Archäologischer Anzeiger 3 (2000), p. 451, Abb. 48; Robert, Carie, p. 228-30, pl. XXXVII, 2 (Amazon with Demeter and Artemis); RPC V.2 Online 66070 (Female deity with Demeter? and Artemis). Dark green patina with earthen highlights, light porosity. Fine. Very rare.

From the Dr. Mark Staal Collection. Ex Tiber Numismatics 7 (1 December 2024), lot 142 (there as Marcianopolis).

The deities on the reverse of this coin have only recently been properly identified. The central figure, holding a double axe and patera, is described as Sabazios or Sozon on a similar coin (without the other deities) by the British Museum. But the primary reference, since 1954, has been Robert who describe this reverse scene as an Amazon with Demeter and Artemis. More recently, however, Robert Fleischer proposed the figures described above after his archaeological research at the dig site of the city turned up monuments, statuary, friezes, coins, and other fragments dedicated to the gods.
