STONE SEAL. Sasanian Empire. 224-651 CE. (20 mm). Carnelian. A thick intaglio with rounded back and tapered sides. On the face, a bearded man wearing earrings and a tunic faces right. Surrounding, a small inscription in Pahlavi: “y’pwn” Pāyōn – a name. Göbl No. 7a. Intact.

Note on name read: Name and transliteration checked against Justi, Iranisches Namenbuch and Gignoux, Noms propres Sassanides en moyen- perse. Both attest to “Pay-“ having a reference to (foot or base) and plausible as a name in Sassanian.
