SCARABS. Lower Egypt or Levant. Middle Kingdom. 1800-1500 BCE. Darkened enstatite. (21x16 mm). Back is crudely engraved, showing only the head of the scarab. Base engraved with western semitic - style mimicking a glyphs of a scarab surrounded by two “URAEI” (cobras) over a crocodile. . A rare material. A few minor chips. Pierced for suspension.

The scarab symbolizes spontaneous creation, Uranus represents the fiery eyes of “RA”, the crocodile symbolizes the Nile. This formula means “rebirth of the Nile for the Lower Kingdom of Egypt”. Darkened Enstatite is made from Magnesium Silicate, a member of Pyroxene Group.
