IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX, laureate head of Nero right / Hercules, nude, standing right, restraining the Ceryneian Hind, struggling to right, with his knee placed upon its lowered hind quarters and grappling it by the antlers; foliage flanking. Alföldi, Kontorniat 210 and pl. 84, 5 (this example). Dark green-brown patina, roughness, cleaning scratches. Good Fine. Extremely rare. The only known depiction of this labor of Hercules on a contorniate. |
