KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28.5mm, 16.91 g, 12h). “Alexandreia Troas” mint. Struck circa 297-281 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; ΘE monogram to inner left, ME monogram in exergue. Meadows, Earliest 11, dies O8/R– (unlisted rev. die); Thompson 154; Müller 314; Meydancikkale 2657 (same obv. die). Iridescent tone. Good VF. Well centered and high relief.
In his die study of the lifetime Lysimachi attributed to Alexandreia Troas, A. Meadows doubted that the attribution of this coinage to that mint was correct, and suggested it be left uncertain. A. Ellis-Evans, in his new die study of the Hellenistic coinage of Alexandreia Troas, agrees that this coinage should no longer be given to that mint.
