CARTHAGE, Third Punic War. Circa 149-146 BC. Serrate BI Double Shekel (25mm, 12.78 g, 12h). Wreathed head of Tanit left / Horse standing right; pellet to right. Visonà, Serrated, Variety P1, 63–74 (obv. die 1); MAA 100; CNP 62a; SNG Copenhagen 403 var. (position of pellet). Lightly toned, rough surfaces. VF.

Purchased by the consignor from Poinsignon Numismatique, 17 March 2008.

From the last issue of Carthage before its destruction by a vengeful Rome following the Third Punic War (149-146 BC). The serrate edge is found on both electrum and billon coins of the period and is similar to the flan treatments of contemporary Macedonian and Seleukid bronze coins. The reason for this added detail remains a mystery.

Closing Date and Time: 3 June 2026 at 10:28:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
