EASTERN EUROPE, Imitations of Thasos. Circa 90-75 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 16.99 g, 12h). ‘Auflösung der Legend’ (Degraded legend) type. Mint in the lower Danube region. Head of young Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath / Herakles standing facing, head left, holding club in right hand, lion’s skin draped over left arm; monogram to inner left; to right, amphora. Lukanc Xe groupe, 1914-5 var. (rev. legend and monogram); OTA III/3 var. (rev.legend, no monogram or amphora); Lanz 971-4 var. (rev. legend, different monogram, no amphora); KMW –; CCCBM I –. Toned, light porosity, trace deposits. Good VF. Extremely rare variety with an amphora and complete legends. A series with an amphora with an array of dots or dashes is also known and are well represented in Lukanc.
